Happy Super Moon and Lunar Eclipse in Scorpio! The Super Full Moon at approximately 25 degrees of Scorpio becomes exact on Monday, May 16 at 12:13 AM New York Time (04:13 GMT). The Total Lunar Eclipse reaches its maximum point just two minutes prior.
This is the second and final Eclipse in this first Eclipse Season of 2022. When the sun and moon oppose one another, meaning it is a Full Moon, we have a Lunar Eclipse, where the moon passes through the Earth’s shadow. This is a Total Lunar Eclipse. It will (rarely) be completely visible from the eastern third of the United States and Canada, as well as from the entire continent of South America. The western parts of North America may be able to see only some of it.
As a reminder, Eclipses are special lunations. During an Eclipse, new information/codes are downloaded to us that help to re-calibrate us. The energetic effects of the Eclipse last for six months—but the changes that occur in the six months following an eclipse have effects for a lifetime.
This is a South Node Eclipse, meaning that the energy of it helps us to revisit, re-evaluate, and ultimately let go of or transmute the negative karmic patterns that we carry—those that our rooted from the past, both in this and past lifetimes.
This is massively amplified with the moon forming a nearly-exact square with Saturn, the ruler of karma, and it occurring during a super-strong Mercury Retrograde in its home sign of Gemini! And to boot, this is a SuperMoon, meaning the moon is physically closer to the earth than usual. A SuperMoon carries a stronger energy with it than a normal Full Moon! So, this is definitely one of the strongest and most significant lunations in recent memory.
When the Scorpio Full Moon rolls around, it holds a special place in my Heart. As someone with a Scorpio sun and a predominantly Scorpio chart, it is by far my favorite sign. I love the depth, the passion, and the life-or-death feeling of intensity that Scorpio represents.
Scorpio is a fixed water sign, the eighth sign of the Zodiac, and the ruler of the Eighth House—The House of Sex. This house rules over sex, taboos, death, taxes, and wills/legacies. It is ruled by Pluto, the planet of death, destruction and transformation. As a fixed sign, it is stubborn and loyal. As a water sign, it is deeply emotional.
Scorpio is associated with the scorpion. Its glyph is an ‘M’ with the tail pointed outward, like a scorpion’s stinger. The ‘M’s tail is also a phallic symbol. Scorpio rules over the genitals and sex in general--but especially the aspects of sex that have to do with power exchanges, taboos, and deeply-rooted psychological aspects (aka Freudian psychology).
As the most deeply emotional of all the Zodiac signs, Scorpio invites us to really honor the depth of all our emotions--especially the uncomfortable ones, like rage, fear, and grief. It asks for us to acknowledge the presence of shame and guilt within. It encourages us to honor the depth of the 'man' part of the HU-man—as in the physical, emotional, dense self.
We have the feeling during this SuperMoon Eclipse that there's something deeper that hasn't yet been explored-- like there's a totally new level of rawness beneath the skin that has yet to come up. Scorpio is the sign of death and rebirth, and transformation. Around this lunation, you could find yourself going through intense emotions, like fear, anger, jealousy, grief and loneliness.
The depth and intensity of the Scorpio energy scares many away, because it can be uncomfortable. However, for those brave enough to explore the depths of one's own consciousness and emotional body, the reward is karmic transmutation, which is one of the very reasons you came to this planet and one of the most important facets of the Ascension journey.
Pluto—the ruler of Scorpio—plays an important role in this Eclipse chart, as it trines the sun and the North Node of the moon--and sextiles the moon. This benevolent relationship between Pluto and the sun, moon and the North Node means that the transformation and transmutation that occurs around, and as a result of this Eclipse will be in the Highest Good for the evolution of ourselves--and for the planet.
Pluto also trines the Retrograde Mercury in its home sign of Gemini, meaning that the difficult conversations to be had—especially in regards to unresolved issues from the past—will be important to your Highest Healing as an individual—and on a macro scale, to the Highest Evolution of the human race.
The overall theme of this South Node Lunar Eclipse is re-evaluating the past, and letting go. You must let old ideas, concepts, and stuck energy go. If a relationship needs to end, let it end. If a job or career needs to go, let it go. If you need to discard old belief patterns that no longer serve you, then walk away from your past self and create a brand new self. Eclipse Season is all about transformation and change!
Stare at the Full Moon and ask her what she wants you to let go of. Ask Her to take from you whatever is no longer needed; to remove the burden of any baggage that has become too heavy to shoulder any longer.
What needs to be transformed and transmuted? What icky energy is still there within your energy field? What do you need to do to shed this energy?
Sometimes, we believe that we can't let go of something from the past until we fully understand it. This isn't actually true. Something doesn't have to be fully understood before you can let it go. Remember that every event, experience, or relationship—no matter which emotions it produces in your body or what effect it has on your physical reality—has a positive intention from the perspective of the Life Plan that is created by your soul.
Eventually, enough time will pass and you will be able to interpret the role that the event, experience or relationship had in your Life Plan by seeing what came next.
What experiences did you end up having as a result of that event, experience or relationship that you wouldn't have had otherwise? Who did you end up meeting that you wouldn't have met otherwise? What wisdom did you learn that you were then able to implement into your future choices, to build your emotional and spiritual maturity, and to model or teach to others?
This is the essence of alchemy—to take the difficult experiences from the past and transmute them into wisdom and teaching/helping others going through (or have gone through) similar experiences.
Any tendencies toward escapism or addictions will likely build up a pressure so great inside you that you will find yourself feeling really dense, moody, or overreactive around this Eclipse. Pay attention to those addictive patterns and ask yourself whether they are healthy distractions or compulsions that help you to avoid feeling; methods of self-medicating; or excuses to procrastinate? Thereis a difference between a healthy outlet and an addiction or compulsion. Scorpio/Pluto rules over addictions.
Letting go of unhealthy habits and addictions begins with a firm choice. The discipline required to keep up with keeping old bad habits out of your life builds character and provides energetic fuel to help you make leaps and bounds forward in other aspects of your life.
I just want to say that I believe in you, I know that you have the power within to let go of whatever you need to!
INTENSE SATURN SQUARE
The most significant aspect of this Full Moon/Eclipse chart, by far, is that Saturn, the ruler of karma, in Aquarius, forms a nearly-exact square to the sun and moon. Saturn is a difficult, stubborn planet that saves the records of everything that’s happened in the past.
This is both helpful and difficult. On one hand, Saturn is the planet that is in charge of long-term growth and structure. On the other hand, Saturn never forgets, and it always holds one accountable for negative karma that’s been accumulated.
This karma-balancing aspect of Saturn is of course necessary, as it allows souls to navigate through the lessons of both the light and dark sides of polarity and to ultimately learn to Ascend out of polarity while still in a physical body and largely under a veil of amnesia (disconnected from the entirety of the knowledge and wholeness of the soul-self).
You may feel guilt about things you’ve done in the past around this time. If that guilt comes up, then apologize to someone if you need to apologize. Make amends if you need to make amends. But ultimately, it’s wise to let go of the guilt one way or another, lest it cause you physical, mental and emotional damage. You were only doing the best that you could at the time, based on the level of consciousness that you were at.
You may also feel anger toward what has been done to you in the past. Letting go of past hurts and finding forgiveness is really important during this time. Not only does guilt metaphysically contribute to the development of cancerous cells—but also so does resentment.
Vengeance is never a good idea. Standing up for yourself, but being forgiving of others and self, is the path toward health in the mind and body. You can’t ultimately fully Ascend out of this third density/dimension if still holding onto density in the form of guilt or resentment.
Here are some journal questions to help you work through this process of letting go. Be warned, these questions may be difficult to move through and may evoke difficult emotions. These questions require a high-level of self-awareness. We will also explore the nature of how power affects you, as power is one of the themes that Scorpio/Pluto rule over:
Describe the nature of the pain that still resides within you. How would you describe your core wound?
What defense mechanisms have you enacted over the years to keep yourself safe from having to feel this core wound?
In what ways have you sabotaged yourself in order to keep yourself safe from having to feel this core wound?
Who hurt you? What did they do to you that still lingers within?
Who took away your power? How did they do that? Do you overcompensate by trying to take power over others or over life in some ways, even if those are subtle?
Why haven’t you been able to forgive the people that hurt you and took your power away, and let go of the dense energy fully? What would it mean for you if you were able to do that? Why is it scary to let go of that resentment?
Who would you be if you had no guilt or resentment? Why would it be kind of scary to be that person? What stands between you and becoming that person?
How (and why) are you afraid of your own personal power?
In what ways did you try to take power over others in inappropriate ways? Have you forgiven yourself fully for this? Can you forgive yourself fully for this now?
Who would you be if you were to step fully into your personal power in the most positive, benevolent way?
In what ways have you yet to fully channel your personal power into manifesting what you want in this life? What are you afraid of? What might change if you had what you’ve always wanted? Who would you be if you had what you’ve always wanted?
With asteroid Chiron ‘the Wounded Healer’ conjunct Venus in Aries, I wouldn’t be surprised if for a lot of you, much of what you end up journaling on around the above questions has to do with romantic relationships with men (or more masculine non-binary people).
JUPITER ENTERS ARIES: TAKING ACTION & FEELING SPORTY
Jupiter, the planet of expansion and growth, has entered into Aries, the first sign of the Zodiac. Ruled by Mars, Aries carries the energy of action. So, especially now with Jupiter exalted (amplified) in the first degree of Aries, taking action on anything will pay off handsomely. With Jupiter sextiling Pluto, we can decipher than when we take conscious, intentional action, it will propel us toward positive transformation (as positive transformation could be said to be at the core of the positive, enlightened aspect of Pluto).
You may also feel more energized and interested in athleticism and sport. Now is a great time to move your body!
During Jupiter in Aries, we could see a worsening of violent conflicts like the War in Ukraine, as well as an increase in volcanic eruptions and earthquakes. Jupiter will travel through Aries for a few months, then backtrack Retrograde out of it and return back into Pisces around the beginning of Scorpio season.
Speaking of Retrogrades, let’s delve into the current Mercury Retrograde period.
UNIQUE MERCURY RETROGRADE IN TWO SIGNS
The second Mercury Retrograde of 2022 is a unique one, as it begins in one sign and ends in another. It began on May 10 with its Direct Station in its home sign of Gemini. When Mercury is in its home sign, it is exalted (amplified)! On May 22, it moves into Taurus, and then on June 3 it stations Direct.
Remember that the most intense effects for Mercury Retrograde occur in the 7-10 days before and after the two planetary Stations.
Here is some general advice for Mercury Retrograde:
Make sure that all the 'I's are dotted' and 'all the T's are crossed' when signing any contracts. Consider Murphy's Law during Mercury Retrograde: what can go wrong, will go wrong. Consider holding off on signing contracts until mid-June, if it's something that isn't time-sensitive.
Be extra clear in your communication with others. Give others more leeway than usual. Inquire to clarify what someone means by something if you're unsure, especially if it's via text message or e-mail.
Avoid purchasing big-ticket items (e.g. a new car) until mid-June, if possible
Back up all of your computer files and your smartphone!
Triple-check travel plans and appointment times. Verify times with others.
Release expectations of others, especially when it comes to people responding in a timely fashion. Give people the benefit of the doubt. Expectations of others may go unfulfilled.
As always, use Mercury Retrograde as a time to refine your communication, rather than to be afraid of miscommunications, or electronics breaking down, or travel plans getting interrupted.
During Mercury Retrograde, we have the opportunity to readdress relationships—including those from the past—in order to come to a place of greater balance. With Mercury Retrograde in its home sign of Gemini, it is a good time to actually communicate with others in order to rework and heal what needs to be healed in relationships from the past.
As I said earlier, with Chiron and Venus conjunct one another in Aries, ‘stuff’ could resurface from a past relationship with someone that hurt you deeply, especially if it’s a man (or a more masculine non-binary person). Oftentimes we end up communicating with ex-partners during Mercury Retrograde. If you will be reconnecting with an ex-partner, just be aware that oftentimes when partners reconnect during the Mercury (or Venus) Retrogrades, it might not feel the same when the Retrogrades end. Logically speaking, why did the relationship not work out the first time? Has anything really changed? Keep those things in mind when considering whether to give it another shot or not. Once in awhile though, Mercury or Venus Retrogrades will successfully bring a couple back together and it will work out.
MercuryRetrogrades are always a great time to reconnect with old friends that you haven’t talked to in awhile, and to dig up old, unfinished projects or take care of lingering problems from the past that you haven’t fully solved.
By the way, if you were born under Mercury Retrograde, it's not going to affect you as strongly-- and in fact you might even feel more ‘at home’ during this time.
NEPTUNE & MARS TRINE THE FULL MOON & SEXTILE THE SUN
Dreamy Neptune, next to Mars in Neptune’s own sign of Pisces, forms an exciting trine to this Full Moon, enhancing our dreams and psychic abilities. With Neptune also sextili ng Pluto, pay close attention to your dream time journeys and to your intuitive ‘hits’ at this time, as they may carry important messages that will propel you forward toward that positive transformation that I discussed as being an important aspect of Pluto/Scorpio.
Mars--also in Pisces as I said--trines the Full Moon and sextiles the sun, emphasizing that this is a great time for intuitively-led action. It’s a really, really good idea to pay close attention to your intuition at this time, and to act on what feels right to you!
If you’d like to have some training (or some refresher re-training) on how to develop your unique intuitive skills, please purchase my Mastering Your Intuition webinar here.
LOTS OF SOLAR FLARES: ASCENSION SYMPTOMS HEIGHTENED
We have seen an inordinate number of large (M- and X-class) solar flares during this Eclipse Season. This is causing a marked increase in Ascension Symptoms in many people.
The antidote to these symptoms is to spend time in nature, as well as staying very hydrated, sleeping a lot, and meditating. Check out my list of 30 ways to get grounded.
A WORD ABOUT WORLD EVENTS
Yesterday was a very sad day in my neck of the woods—Western New York. An apparently racially-motivated massacre was committed at a supermarket in Buffalo. With the intense impacts of Pluto and Saturn on this Full Moon/Eclipse chart (and with Jupiter exalted in the first degree of Aries), something like this tragedy is one of the potential darker side effects that can occur from these planets’ influences: hate boiling to the surface.
As Scorpio/Pluto rules over taboo, difficult topics, but with Pluto forming positive aspects to the Retrograde, exalted Mercury, this tragic event can stoke crucial discussions on hatred, race relations and generational pain/trauma.
This is an opportunity for all of us to come together as one. It’s a reminder to embrace our differences with love, as without the contrast of our differences in skin color, cultures, and languages, life would not be anywhere close to as rich and interesting as it is now.
Let it serve as a reminder to go out of your way to connect with those who look different than you, and who are from different cultures or speak different languages. To travel the country and to travel the world. To try different foods. To watch different shows showcasing different cultures. To step outside of the box of your family and the community that you grew up in.
I believe that the greatest thing about my country, the United States of America, is its cultural diversity. That is why our country does not actually have any official language!
In international affairs, keep an eye on what Russia will do next, especially with Finland and Sweden looking to perhaps join NATO. I think it’s unfortunately very likely that Russia will become even more offensive, not only in the sadly war-torn Ukraine, but also perhaps soon in surrounding other former Soviet Bloc nations.
It looks like it could be a continuing very contentious summer in international affairs and there could be more unfortunate death and destruction on the way. The geopolitical climate is at a boiling point right now. Jupiter in Aries can increase violence in all forms (World War II started when Jupiter was in Aries). Please continue to pray for and visualize peace on this planet.
As I mentioned earlier, I would anticipate some major earthquakes and volcanoes this summer. If you live in an earthquake or volcanic zone, you should always pray for the best but be prepared for the worst.
With one of the aspects of Pluto/Scorpio being power, I would expect to see some scandals in the news over the next month having to do with perhaps formerly well-respected people being caught abusing their power.
Also, I believe that the stock market crash that I have been predicting all year is getting closer to becoming reality. It may be that the cryptocurrency market crash that happened last week (which coincided with huge Dow Jones Industrial Average drops but not necessarily ‘crash’ levels) is the preview to a more marked stock market correction coming soon (June?).
We have definitely entered a worldwide recession, and I expect it to last a couple years. The stock market (and the crypto market, for that matter) will eventually recover and have another bull run, but all of the macro elements (and the astrology, with one of the aspects of the Taurus-Scorpio Lunar Nodes being the financial elements on the planet) point to a further downturn first.
WHAT TO DO DURING THE ECLIPSE?
When the Eclipse itself is occurring—from 9:32 PM EDT/New York on May 15 until 2:51 AM EDT/New York on May 16, it’s best to do as little as possible. The less you eat, the better. Don’t delve into anything physically demanding if possible, and don’t get into emotional discussions with people during the Eclipse. During the Eclipse, we are in an energetic void. The energy is very unstable and volatile. It’s best not to do any magickal workings unless you are a very experienced witch and it’s a very important spell, and you know how to harness the powerful Eclipse energies.
Really, the best thing you can do during an Eclipse is to be alone and to be in introspection or sleeping, if possible. Watch the Eclipse if you desire. Basically, the idea is to let the Eclipse pass, and then resume life as normal.
After the Eclipse passes, it’s a great time to do a Full Moon releasing ceremony. One of my favorites is to write anything I want to release on small slips of paper, then ceremoniously throw each slip of paper one-by-one into the fire as I visualize/feel myself letting go of each thing.
You can put your crystals under the Eclipse, they will love the energy!
Wishing you Love, Healing, Peace and Transformation on this Lunar Eclipse and SuperMoon in Scorpio.
With Love,
Matthew John
